Straddling The Oak Ridge Moraine - Uxbridge - The Trail Capital Of Canada

Uxbridge Straddles the Oak ridges Moraine and has distinction of holding the official designation as the Trail Capital of Canada

Town Trails

The Uxbridge trail system includes a network of urban trails that connect to the Oak Ridges Trail and the Trans Canada Trail. The town trails are designed to help residents appreciate the beauty and history of their town by linking various sections of the town together for both walkers and bikers. The Town Trails include  the Ewen Trail, the Historic Trail, the Maple Bridge Trail, the Quaker trail, the Wooden Sticks Trail, and Country Side Preserve.

The Countryside Preserve

With 6 kms of marked trails this 140 acre preserve of rolling meadowlands, woodlands, wetlands and ponds is the jewel in the crown for the Trail Capital of Canada. Located adjacent to the urban area it is located on the southern boundaries of the Uxbridge and on the Oak Ridges Moraine.

The Oak Ridges Moraine

Uxbridge straddles the heights of Oak Ridges Moraine, a ridge of land that runs parallel to Lake Ontario, approximately 60 km north of the lake and extending from the Niagara escarpment in the west to the Trent River in the east. The rolling hills and river valley that make up the Moraine are the result of the advancing and retreating glaciers some 12,000 years ago. Forty five percent of The Township of Uxbridge is located with in the protected area of the Oak Ridges Moraine. This includes extensive rural and natural areas, as well as some hamlets and even a portion of the urban area of the "Town".

Map of The Moraine from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Oak Ridges Moraine is a Provincially protected, environmentally sensitive, area that covers 190,000 hectares. It is important to note that the large deposits of sand and gravel left by the Ice Ages also play a significant part in providing drinking water to a large portion of Ontario's population. The sand and gravel (aquifers) filter rain and melting snow, this filtered water is then released through the rivers and streams flowing south into lake Ontario and North into Lake Simcoe, Lake Scugog, and Rice lake.

Wetlands and Streams

With the wide diversity of, kettle lakes, bogs, wetlands, woodlands and streams, it is no surprise that 65 river systems are found within its boundaries. Roughly 30% of the Moraine is still forested making it is one of the last remaining green belts in southern Ontario.

Picture
satellite view of Lake Simcoe (from wikipedia)

Located approximately 60 - km north of the city of Toronto, Lake Simcoe is one of the worlds largest freshwater lakes that freeze completely over in the winter. Roughly 1/2 of Ontario's population is within one hour's drive of the lake and all that it offers.

The lake occupies roughly 20% of its total watershed of 3,580 km2. It is southern Ontario's largest body of water and is part of the Trent Severn Waterway that connects Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay.

Most of the 35 tributary rivers and five major tributaries that drain the watershed originate along the southern boundary of the watershed. These southern tributaries have their headwaters in the Oak Ridges Moraine and run north into southern shores of the lake.

Early Settlers in the Uxbridge area used these many streams and rivers to supply power for lumber and grist mills. While some dams have been replaced over the years as flood control, the remnants of some of the old dams still remain.

International Jazz and Art Festival To Be Held At Udora's Camp Jõekääru

International Jazz and Art Festival To Be Held At Udora's Camp Jõekääru

Udora - A community where there are more private roads than public roads. A Place where neighbours help neighbours. A place that few know exists even though it appears on the Ontario Road Maps.

Originally known as Snoddon Corners it was renamed in the early 1860s when it came time to select a name for the post office.

Udora is located only 15 Minutes from Lake Simcoe which is know internationally for its; swimming, boating, fishing and fishing competitions.

Chances are if you know where Udora is you either live there, or pass through on the way to your summer cottage perhaps even stopping in at One of the last original General Stores in Ontario still in operation, and still distributing mail to the local residents, for the delicious home baked goods.

The 145 plus year old store has had only seven family owners in all that time. Even today it is the hub of this small hamlet just north of Uxbridge, Ontario. A place where the "locals" come to get their mail and catch up on all the local news.

Udora housing ranges from homes built in the 1800's to cottages built in the 50's to the latest addition, a small estate subdivision that overlooks the Pefferlaw river valley on the west side of the community.

Sitting in the outer reaches of Georgina (York Region) and Uxbridge (Durham Region) Udora is a small community that straddles the boundary between the south east corner of Georgina and the north east corner of Uxbridge. It is a community, divided by the 905 and 705 area codes, by local Municipal and Regional boundaries, and by Provincial and Federal electoral boundaries.

Camp Jõekääru

Growth was slow until the early 1950's when the Independent Toronto Estonian Woman's Association purchased land and divided it into 150 lots for summer cottages for Estonians living in Toronto. The grounds, named Jõekääru which means river bend in English, straddle the Pefferlaw river as it winds its way through the community. With the cottages also came the Estonian Children's Camp, Which is still active today as an Estonian language immersion camp for part of the summer.

Road Trips - Walters Falls

If your ever up in the Bruce peninsula area there is a wonderful old mill dam and waterfalls in the little Hamlet of Walters Falls that make a side trip well worth while. Walters Falls is one of seven waterfalls on the 150 kms Grey County's Waterfall Tour.

Walters Falls

Walters Falls - The Mill Dam

You just never know who you will run into on a road trip.

After talking pictures of the Falls we drove around town a little and stopped at the corner gas station / general store / restaurant for a soda

The sign caught my eye so I started taking pictures.

This caught the attention of the proprietors Carl and Cathie Eno.

Their web site claims they are not easy to find as ...

"... our roads tend to turn you around a bit.  the locals love to watch lost tourists drive by slowly. the favourite sport is predicting how long it will be before there're back again, and which way they will be heading. Instead of driving around town just stop in. We'll make sure you get where your going"

True to form Carl came over and we started to chat about the area one thing led to another and we ended up talking about where they were from. You Guessed it they used to live in Leaskdale, one of the hamlets in the north end of Uxbridge. After spending some time getting Carl up to speed on local Uxbridge folks he knew when he lived here we headed out to check out some of the high points he told us about in our conversation.

Thanks Carl the views were Fantastic.

Save some dough?

I thought I would go to the source (dmoz.org) used for the links in Lane's post to see if there were more links for frugality.

I am sure we all know someone who could use a little help right about now so pass on these links as welll

Via Lane Bailey - REALTOR & Car Guy (Diamond Dwellings Realty):

Times are rough... they are rough for many of us... especially in the real estate industry.  We are finding our belts and sucking them in a few notches...  But not just in the real estate industry.

Last night I was talking with some friends that are in the business of state and local government.  Furloughs, hours reductions and no raises are just some of the ways they are being affected...  Out in the private sector, pay cuts, layoffs and other cutbacks are all over the place.

But that isn't news...

One can barely turn on the radio, TV or computer without seeing rough news about the economy... and the news is getting rougher.  Instead of stemming job losses with the "stimulus package", it seems that losses are still running heavily.  Increased governmental debt and looming tax increases are keeping businesses from expanding.  The dollar is remaining weak, keeping the cost of fuel high, despite lower worldwide demand.

But there IS something that we can do about it...

We can save money.  Did you know that Google has multiple directories of resources to save money?  I didn't...  I know now, though.  From ways to lower food expenses to coupons and freebies... there are all sorts of resources for all of us to use to help us enjoy life while saving a few more bucks.  And even if we think the job is secure and our risk exposure is low, saving a few dollars can reap huge rewards...  Think of the amazing investment opportunities that are out there right now... from undervalued, but healthy companies that might be great to own stock in, to super deals on real estate for investment purposes...  Since the economy is tough, it is a buyer's market all over.

This is the time when solutions can be found and the foundations will be poured for future financial gains.  And the first step is putting ourselves into a position to do something about it.

The baby-step for financial security is saving money...  So, try this

If you are looking for that investment property in Gwinnett County, let me know...

Swinging By The Bay - A Stay-cation Destination

Take a Stay-cation

The Warfs @ GravenhurstThe warfs in Gravenhurst, Muskoka were all but empty when I shot these Photos in 2008 but on On Sat July 11th 2009 they will be a bee hive of activity as they play host to the 29th annual Antique and Classic Boat Show. A place for the young to dream and and the old to reminisce. A place to see History come alive once again.

Visit the Antique and Classic Boat Society's annual Boat Show at the Gravenhust, Muskoka Wharf. The theme this year is "Swinging By the Bay" celebrating post war utility boats and the Big Band Era of the 1940s and 1950s. This a judged show featuring Dukes, Greavettes, and Seabirds. These boats were often used by the younger generation to collect their friends and head off to the waterfront dance halls. Admission is $10.00 with children under 12 being free.

While at the show you may want to pay a visit to the Muskoka Boat and Heritage Centre to see some of the new exibits for this year including a private collection of antique and wooden boat models, toys and Muskoka memorabilia, The Boat Builders of Muskoka: Past & Present and a traveling exhibit from the Canadian Canoe Museum. Their line up of wooden boats in the main exhibit area and the Grace & Speed Boathouse will continue to showcase the craftsmanship of the world famous Muskoka boat builders.

There will be something for everyone here starting with the ever popular field of dreams with a wide array of boats just waiting for someone looking to restore an old dream boat. The traditional flea market will be back where you can check to see if that missing part you so desperately are looking for may be hidden away and of course there will be many vendors with everything from "A" to "Z" of boating.

For the youngsters there will be a special tent where they will be able to participate in the dream of building a real or model boat. Youth 10 and older will be able to help build a real seven foot dory from 9:30 till noon and in the afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00 children over 8 will be able to build cardboard boats with material supplied

Some of the anticipated entries in this years show include a replica of a 1940s Peterborough Zepher, and a new design barrel back sport boat. There will be Minett's and Greavettes,Dispros and Ditchburns, canoes and steamers all in all likely one of the finest collections of classic and antique boats to be found in one place.

Uxbridge Garden Tour

"A Fund Raiser For Community Care Durham "

"Gardens of Uxbridge", is a self guided tour through 8 gardens in rural and urban settings. Enjoy a "stay-cation" right in your own back yard. Meet others who have turned their property into a retreat or a backyard into an urban oasis. Tickets $20.00, includes box lunch, available at Blue Heron Books,  RBC Royal Bank, and Garden Artifacts. Proceeds benefit Community Care Durham - Uxbridge. For more information contact 905-852-7445 or visit our website at www.communitycaredurham.on.ca.

1.      Garden Hosts: Brian & Dianne

With a casual gardening philosophy, using traditional favourites, Dianne and Brian have devoted 20 years to building a spectacular flower garden oasis surrounding their century home and barn. Flowers are everywhere, particularly Asiatic and day lily beds, with a large pond surrounded by flower beds. As you pass thru the front garden, the raised vegetable garden is of particular interest, as well note the interesting places to sit. The foundation from the original barn provides a unique backdrop to a garden graced by iron gates and wrought iron window boxes.

2.      Garden Hosts: Jody & Wayne

Begin your tour at the front with a walk thru the woodland shade garden. Enter the back garden thru the pergola passing along side the vegetable garden, where the walkway takes you to a formal dining area. From there you can wander to any part of this large property. Arbors lead you from one area to another. Wayne's folly adds a decorative element to the garden. Jody divides her spare time between gardening and being an active volunteer for Durham Hospice. She hopes you'll share her passion and visit www.durhamhospice.com to find out more about how you can help.

3.      Garden Hosts: Dave & Karen

Through continuous learning and experimentation this property is a series of informal gardens with a variety of themes that are both kid and dog friendly. The casual country garden is filled with strolling paths and it is an attractive habitat for birds, butterflies and dragonflies. Backing onto a forest can present challenges, such as wildlife nibbling at the plants but it does provide a natural backdrop for wild flowers and perennials to blend; an ornamental fish pond with a rock garden add to the peaceful feeling of the landscape.

4.      Garden Hosts: Lisa & Kerry

"Everything Goes" is Lisa's motto when it comes to her compact garden and pool which features many colorful perennials and a rock garden that features a water fountain for the birds to enjoy. The front yard will catch your attention as you drive up, but the backyard is what is most enchanting with a unique fence that allows both privacy and openness. Feel free to take a peak at the neighbouring gardens; they add even more enjoyable space.

5.      Garden Hosts: Margaret & Gary

As the saying goes "Good things come in small packages".  The yard may be small - but it is abundant in Bee Balm, Hydrangeas, lilies and many perennials along with annual splashes of color.  The "Little Garden that Grew" has been an ever changing palate as each year goes by with the sun, sun/shade and shady spots being always challenging for Margaret to work with.  The garden is accented with a Buddha and a Shady Lady and Gary's "walk through" garden shed allows for easy access from both the front and back yards.  Towering cedars trees and the sounds of rushing water make the back yard a quiet oasis from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

6.      Garden Host: Lorraine

Being a creative and daring gardener, Lorraine finds gardening therapeutic and peaceful. Her use of perennials, grasses and  herbs are divided into three main sections; sunny, part sun/shade and shade. The water features of her garden, such as the pondless waterfall and pool add a unique dimension to this garden. A relaxation/dining area offers a space for entertaining and outdoor living.

7.      Garden Hosts: Peter & Donna

This garden is a hole-in-one and sure to please both garden and golf enthusiasts. Together, Donna and Peter have created a backyard in which to relax and enjoy the birds, once all the work is done. The pool/garden area offers many special features such as a Victorian garden shed, pond and outdoor fireplace. Hanging baskets give full colour throughout the season. So pull up a Muskoka chair and relax!

8.      Garden Hosts: Wolfgang & Judy

A special passion for roses, as well as hostas and hydrangeas, typifies this garden that has lots to offer in a very small space. Walk around the property on the stone walkway and notice the use of natural stone for garden definition. Special accents include a stone bench on the front yard and a small pond in the backyard.

The 8th Annual Purple Turtle Art Festival

With it's ideal location, stretching along the south shore of Lake Simcoe, the various communities of Georgina are host to many events that are a draw to this tourist orientated town. In the winter there is always snowmobiling, ice fishing and of course the Canadian Ice Fishing Championship. In the summer there's boating and angling along with The Blue Bridge Festival The Eaglewood Folk Festival, the Georgina Studio Tour and of course the Purple Turtle Art Festival.

Earlier this year Georgina lost a Landmark when the Red Barn Theatre was destroyed by fire. Local Artist Gail Young was asked to paint a watercolour of The Red Barn Theatre as the draw prize. Anyone attending the show has the opportunity of filling out a ballot for a chance to take home the painting. The draw will take place at the close of the show on Sunday July 19th.
